Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is the use of low or high frequency current with intensities that can stimulate both the sensory and motor systems and has been shown to be effective in treating acute and chronic pain, orthopaedic pain, neuropathic pain, myofascial pain, complex regional pain syndrome and pain associated with cancer. It is a non-pharmacologic, non-invasive treatment for pain and can reduce the dose and/or need for pain medication. It is commonly used in the post-op period and can be safely used over a long period of time without side-effects.
